The
EMS ID is intended to be a master account number, publicly visible and unique
to the individual provider. Any certifications earned by that provider
would then be associated with that person’s EMS ID. If the provider moved to a
new state or earned a higher certification level within NREMT, then a new
certification number for that state or for that certification level would be
issued and linked to the provider’s EMS ID.

The EMS ID also
plays a role in allowing a provider from one state to have temporary privileges
in another area. Rapid verification of an EMS provider’s licensure and
certification status could be easily handled when out-of-area providers arrive
to assist during regional or national disasters. This is particularly valuable
for the members of the EMS Compact, an interstate agreement among 20 states
that permit EMS personnel from one state to practice on a short-term,
intermittent basis under certain circumstances.

The EMS ID concept
is currently in phase one of its rollout and is still in the process of being
adopted. ImageTrend Inc., a developer of EMS software, recently announced an
offer to connect its License Management program with the National EMS
Coordinated Database. This move will simplify the process of verifying an EMS
provider’s status in states that participate in the EMS Compact.

If you already had
an account with the NREMT prior to January 23, 2020, a National EMS ID has
already been generated for you and is available in your account. If you do not
have a NREMT account, you can sign up for an account at www.nremt.org
to receive a unique twelve-digit EMS ID for free.
