On
January 26, 2020 the first COVID-19 case was confirmed in California, which was the
third case in the United States. The 50 year old man, who had reportedly
returned home from a trip to Wuhan, China, was released on February 1, 2020 and
sent to in home isolation. Although he was the first, he was certainly not the
last.

On March 19, 2020, a statewide stay at home order was put into
effect to increase social distancing and help decrease the rate in which the
infection was spreading. The statewide stay at home order seemed to work well,
as the number of cases being diagnosed each day was relatively low, starting in
January through the end of May. However, California started to see a large increase in the amount of COVID cases
being diagnosed per day starting in mid to late June, which was around the time
that businesses and other public venues began to open back up.

During July 2020, California hit
its peak to date at about 12,000 confirmed cases per day. During September, the
confirmed cases per day never rose above 6,000. Since mid-September, the
confirmed cases per day has remained below 6,000, at around 3,000 per day. It
appears that California may have reached its peak in July of 2020, and the
amount of confirmed diagnosed cases per day is on the decline. With the
COVID-19 vaccine reportedly around the corner, the COVID-19 pandemic may soon
be over.

For more information, including California’s COVID-19: hospital bed utilization, death rate per day, death grow rate, and total confirmed cases, visit California Paramedic Foundation’s COVID-19 webpage and The New York Times California Covid Map and Case Count.

References:

The New York Times.
